Not in My Back Yard

While some people are simply unware of the importance of implementing low carbon and renewable energy projects, others support the development of clean energy sources, but only as long as these projects are not in their neighbourhoods. This problem is called ‘Not in My Back Yard’ (NIMBY), and it represents a form of societal resistance to the implementation of numerous energy projects.

The problem is generally believed to affect large energy infrastructure projects, but smaller scale urban projects appear to be increasingly among its victims. Urban residents are adverse to such projects due to aesthetic or noise concerns, which they ultimately fear that will diminish comfort and property value. This is the reason why numerous owners associations oppose the development of smart cities projects.
