PIME'S Site Vitoria-Gasteiz

Vitoria-Gasteiz is the capital city of the province of Álava and of the autonomous community of the Basque Country in northern Spain with a population of 235,665 people. It will be the European Green Capital in 2012.

The main focus of the community is to avoid the need of cooling during the summer and reduce the need of energy for heating in winter. Solar technology and advanced energy distribution will be used to reach the goals of the Concerto 3 programme.

Cerdanyola del Vallès is a city located in the outskirts of Barcelona with an area of 32,000 m² for 57,830 inhabitants. Approximately 30% of the surface consist of a protected area named “Parc de Collserola”. It is of high ecological value and should therefore be classified as a protected area soon.

Zaragoza is together with Lyon one of the 2 cities involved in the RENAISSANCE project, part of the Concerto Initiative. The project involves El Picarral, an existing community in need of building refurbishment and urban re-generation, and Valdespartera, a new community. Both are linked by the integrated political commitment of all actors and a common set of performance criteria.

Viladecans with 64,277 inhabitants is part of the complex regional web that is the metropolitan area ov Barcelona. It is a coastal community, 12 km from Barcelona. It has seen fast population growth, with a number of inhabitants moving from other parts of Spain, and planning and development in the district has been unstructured. Households in the area have lower income and higher unemployment than the regional average.

ECO-City Site Tudela

Tudela is a community  with around 35,000 inhabitants to the south of Pamplona in the region of Navarra, Spain. Tudela will put intelligent energy management at the centre of its sustainability plan.  The community of Navarra occupies an important position in the field of renewable energies, and as such, has been since 2001 the official headquarters of the National Centre for Renewable Energies (CENER).  A national training centre for renewable energy is also located in the region. Both of these institutions are lending their  expertise to the community.

DIRECTION Site Valladolid

The city of Valladolid, located in central Spain with a Mediterranean continental climate, participated in the DIRECTION project that aimed at demonstrating how the use of very innovative and cost-effective energy-efficient technologies can lead to the achievement of very-low-energy new buildings. This objective, along with the effective adoption of low-energy buildings, was achieved by switching to a model whereby energy efficiency provided value to the market and represented an attractive asset across the whole of the value chain.

REMOURBAN Site Valladolid

Valladolid is the capital of the autonomous region of Castile and Leon in the north-west part of Spain, and with a population of 307 052 people it is the biggest city in the region. The demonstration site of the REMOURBAN project in Valladolid covers the FASA district, which has a surface of 3.5 km2 and is part of the Delicias neighbourhood, located in the south-east of Valladolid. The district was designed and built at the beginning of the 1960s for workers of the FASA company.

Located 11 km from Bilbao, Sestao is a municipality with a strong post-industrial character. It has an area of 3.5 km2 where only 0.9 km2 are devoted to residential use and the rest is used for industrial purposes.

BUILDSMART Site Bilbao

The demonstration building is a three-block residential building located in the Portugalete municipality in Greater Bilbao and is developed by the Basque Government’s Department of Housing, Public Works and Transport. The implemented technologies had to be energy-efficient in order to achieve the target value but at the same time low-cost, because the developer couldn’t afford expensive technology. The social scope of the project is also important as it is oriented towards social housing.

Suptropical Mediterranean climate with very mild winters and long warm to hot summers. The annual average temperature is 17.8 °C. Building from 2001. Ground floor assigned to commercial use, and 4 other floors, which are dedicated to residential use. The building has a centralized natural gas boiler and there are no installed RES for heating or electricity. The annual final energy consumption is 61 kWh/m2, of which 54 kWh/m2 from natural gas and 7 kWh/m2 from electricity.
