Join the Sinfonia team on Friday 17 July 2020 at 10:30 for their last SINFONIA "Smart City Talks" webinar to learn more about the experience of our lighthouse city Bolzano in deploying smart urban services for its citizens!

The city of Bolzano is one of the first smart cities in Italy. Within the framework of the EU-funded SINFONIA project, the Municipality collaborated with research centres and companies to design and implement an Urban Service-Oriented Sensible Grid (USOS-grid) that will improve mobility and expand the services offered to citizens.

Tartu Virtual Baltic Smart City Dialogue

In the EU, municipalities are increasingly developing “smart” solutions for urban infrastructures and their integration. Frequently, the vision of a “smart city” is portrayed as key for sustainable, climate friendly municipalities. Building on a German smart city stakeholder dialogue, the project intends to foster European dialogue and learning on smart cities for climate mitigation. The focus will be on the infrastructure sectors mobility, energy and waste management and water and their integration.

Voted European Capital of Innovation 2014, Barcelona is a vast metropolitan hub with a long tradition of industry and entrepreneurship. Barcelona City Council encourages strategic initiatives aimed at generating international collaboration, and promoting a global and forward-looking vision to businesses and public bodies, as well as scientific and technological centres.

REMOURBAN Site Nottingham

The area around Sneinton Road in Nottingham is considered to be the most appropriate for the development of the REMOURBAN demo site in the United Kingdom. The site is nearby the existing district heating and the pipeline reaches Bio City, situated very close to Sneinton Road. There is substantial Nottingham City Council housing in the area that needs upgrading to a much more energy-efficient state. Near the site is one of the famous city landmarks – George Green’s Windmill – and the science centre.

NEXT-BUILDINGS Site Amsterdam

Houthaven used to be a harbour and timber handling area, situated close to Amsterdam city centre, where many wood factories and related companies were located. After a long history of industrial activities, Houthaven is being transformed into a residential area. In total, seven islands are under development, providing space for 2 200 dwellings, 70 houseboats and 50 000 m2 facilities. In the NEXT-BUILDINGS project, 30 000 m2 of net zero-energy buildings were realised within Houthaven in the area named Blok 0.

REMOURBAN is a lighthouse project whose ultimate goal is to design and validate a urban regeneration model in the cities of Nottingham (United Kingdom), Valladolid (Spain) and Tepebasi/Eskisehir (Turkey), while maximizing its replication potential in two follower cities, Seraing (Belgium) and Miskolc (Hungary). The model leverages the convergence between energy, mobility and ICT to improve quality of life, ensure social acceptance and empower citizens.

The NEXT-Buildings project focuses on low energy buildings also called active houses, which are not only buildings, but active components in the overall integrated energy systems. The target is to demonstrate affordable solutions for social housing and revitalisation of town areas. The solutions will reduce CO2 at no or negative cost seen in a total perspective. Targeted CO2 reduction cost can be minus € 80/tonne taking the benefits of lower energy bills into account, to even better figures when national grants are included.

GrowSmarter aims to stimulate city uptake of smart solutions by using the three Lighthouse cities Stockholm (Sweden), Cologne (Germany) and Barcelona (Spain) as a way to showcase 12 Smart City solutions: from advanced information and communication technology and better connected urban mobility, to incorporating renewable energy sources directly into the city’s supply network. This will provide other cities with valuable insights on how they work in practice and opportunities for replication.

The 12 Smart City solutions are split into three areas of action:
