Virtual Talk: Quality of life in European capital cities
DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion are pleased to invite you to the 20th EMPL Triple A Virtual Talk on May 28th at 14:30-16:00.
“Quality of life in European capital cities”
The speaker (Tadas Leončikas, Eurofound) will present results from this Eurofound publication. Findings based on the European Quality of Life survey illustrate that capital cities tend to generally have a better quality of life than in other parts of a country. The study examines this divide with respect to:
- individual quality of life;
- quality of public services, as capital city advantage is not evident in a number of countries as long as most capital cities have a large disadvantage in terms of housing security compared to population elsewhere;
- quality of society, as capital cities tend to have higher trust in national institutions, as well as higher satisfaction with democracy and economy.
In light of the continued growth of capital city populations and the concentration of resources within them, the study examines if these advantages are mostly related to specific demographics that these cities nurture and attract or they stem from opportunities that major cities provide due to their scale and economic growth.
