High Level Group on Simplification tackles bottlenecks

The High Level Group on Simplification, launched by the European Commission in July, held its first meeting in Brussels in October 2015. Since 2009, some 6,500 local authorities have committed to the 2020 CO2 reduction objective. As part of the “new and integrated Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy”, signatory cities will pledge action to support the implementation of the new 2030 EU targets, a joint approach to tackling mitigation and adaptation to climate change, and the extension of the initiative to a more global scope.

Commission to invest EUR 16 billion in research funding over next two years

The European Commission will invest almost EUR 16 billion in research and innovation in the next two years under Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation funding scheme, following a new Work Programme for 2016-17 adopted in the first half of October. The programme will support a range of cross-cutting initiatives and includes EUR 232 million for Smart and Sustainable Cities to better integrate environmental, transport, energy and digital networks in EU's urban environments.

A third of safe carbon budget may be determined by urban policy decisions

One third of the world’s remaining safe carbon budget could be determined by urban policy decisions in the next five years, according to a new report from the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) which demonstrates that urban policy decisions before 2020 could determine up to a third of the remaining global carbon budget that is not already ‘locked-in’ by past decisions.
 

Smart Cities Project Coordinators' Meeting held in Brussels

The first European Smart Cities Project Coordinators Meeting took place in Brussels on October 13. The goal of the meeting, which brought project leaders together with town planners and architects, was to gain feedback on ways to efficiently process information through the Smart Cities and Communities Information System (SCIS) platform and to ensure project replication across Europe.
