The SORCER project was based on energy efficient dwellings with a maximum use of sustainable energy in two communities: Hillerød in Denmark and Apeldoorn in the Netherlands. As part of the project, Hillerød and Apeldoorn worked on very ambitious developments and their cooperation increased the impact of the demonstration, helping Europe to reduce dependence on energy imports, increase sustainability and stimulate growth and jobs.

The Ullerødbyen area in Hillerød involved approximately 50 Energy Class 1 houses (41% heat savings and 100% RES usage compared to normal Danish practice) and approximately 670 eco-dwellings (33% and 100% respectively) The energy supply structure in the project was fully integrated and consisted of a bio-gasification plant, a biomass boiler, power from 50 kW turbines, a PV system of 8,000 kWp, heat from 3,000 m2 of solar collectors and individual supply such as heat pumps.

In Zuidbroek, Apeldoorn 1,000 dwellings were built to a standard 20% higher than regulations in place at the time, due to additional measures taken by then developers and heat from a wood pellet plant at the waste water treatment plant facility in Zuidbroek. A digester and CHP plants converted sewage sludge into heat which, together with heat from a wood pellet boiler, was transferred to the district heating grid. The project resulted in a reduction of fossil fuel demand of about 80% compared to the Dutch reference situation.
